The Assumption of the Virgin, Alessandro Bonvicino (known as Moretto), 1524-1526

Venetian Heritage has undertaken the restoration of the altarpiece depicting the Assumption of the Virgin by Alessandro Bonvicino, known as Il Moretto—an important cultural initiative celebrating the artistic heritage of Brescia and its historical ties with the Venetian Republic.
Brescia was part of the Serenissima from 1426 to 1797, and this work, an oil on canvas placed on the high altar of the Duomo Vecchio, represents a precious testament to that shared history.
Il Moretto, one of the most distinguished painters of the Italian Renaissance, is renowned for his harmonious compositions and the refinement with which he translated religious themes into painting. His art shows a profound influence from the Venetian school, to the extent that it is believed he may have trained in Titian’s workshop in Venice. This connection is evident in the similarities between Moretto’s altarpiece and Titian’s celebrated Assumption, a revolutionary masterpiece housed in the Basilica dei Frari.
This restoration project not only preserves an essential testimony of Brescia’s history but also underscores the enduring relevance and power of the Venetian Renaissance—a remarkable period of artistic innovation and brilliance.
The project serves as an example of promoting and celebrating not only Venetian cultural heritage but also the rich legacy of all the territories that once belonged to the Serenissima Republic.
