The exhibition A Cabinet of Wonders unfolds in two distinct yet interwoven chapters, each a homage to the art of collecting and the enduring allure of wonder.
In the first chapter, the ‘Mythological Rooms’ evoke the spirit of the Wunderkammer—the Cabinets of Curiosity that flourished in the 16th and 17th centuries. These intimate sanctuaries were designed to envelop the passionate collector in a world of marvels, a tapestry of treasures drawn from every corner of the natural and supernatural realms: Naturalia et Mirabilia. Here, we have meticulously recreated these enchanted spaces, brimming with wonders, through exceptional loans from international museums, cultural institutions, and private collectors, complemented by works from the Museo di Palazzo Grimani.
The second chapter leads us into “The George Loudon Collection,” a world of wonders born of a deeply personal vision and a profound passion for discovery. This unique selection, drawn from the remarkable collection of George and Angie Loudon, is presented as an immersive art installation for the very first time. A connoisseur who began his journey with contemporary art, George Loudon’s insatiable curiosity for the natural and scientific worlds soon guided him to uncover the beauty and magic within objects and illustrations from 19th-century life sciences. In this scenographic odyssey, artifacts emerge from shadowed origins, shedding their utilitarian pasts to reveal themselves as exquisite works of art, radiant with unexpected poetry.
These two sections, while distinct, mirror and engage with one another, creating a dialogue that invites reflection on the art and practice of collecting. Together, they explore the intricate interplay of process, passion, and perspective, offering a rich contrast between historical and contemporary contexts, between the treasures of the past and the reimagined wonders of the present.
